Will New Jersey Phase Out Gas Car Sales in 10 Years?

When California announced its plan to phase out gas car sales in the state in an effort to reduce smog, New Jersey was one of several states to follow suit. Now, President Trump has signed congressional resolutions to block the plan, which will significantly limit (or even eliminate) New Jersey’s ability to implement a phase-out of its own.

The familiar arguments pit environmentalist concerns against affordability and freedom of choice. Both California and New Jersey are filing lawsuits to challenge the legality of the congressional resolutions, which will likely result in several back-and-forths between the key stakeholders. Bottom line: Considering that phase-out plans were expected to begin in 2027, the state may see significant delays on the horizon.
