Ford and Toyota Speed Up Assembly Lines to Keep Pace with Global Competition
With China nearing unprecedented numbers, domestic manufacturers are struggling to keep pace. Ford recently laid out plans for how they would build a midsize electric car by 2027. The conglomerate wants to sell the car for $30,000 and produce it 40% faster than its current counterparts. To do this, they’ll need to invest $2 billion in their Louisville Assembly Plant. Instead of one conveyor belt, it will be three separate assembly lines.
Similarly, Toyota is revamping its Georgetown plan, introducing an assembly process where anything from Camrys to EVs can be built on the same line. This highly automated operation is driven by robotics and Toyota execs believe that this will allow for more flexibility and fewer errors. In fact, they think that this will become the new standard for all manufacturers around the world.
